The market for Modern and Post-War masters: records, depth and who really trades

How big and how deep is the market for Modern and Post-War masters? Global art sales were about 59.6 billion dollars in 2025, up 4%, with public auctions at 20.7 billion and sales of works above 10 million dollars up 30% (Art Basel and UBS, 2026). A few names carry the top: Klimt's record of 236.4 million dollars in November 2025, Warhol at 195 million, Picasso at 179.4 million. Depth varies a lot by artist: Warhol had about 2,100 lots offered in two years, Basquiat about 170.

Key takeaways

November 2025, the night the modern record moved

On 18 November 2025 at Sotheby's New York, Gustav Klimt's Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer sold for 236.4 million dollars with fees. It beat Klimt's previous record of 109 million and Picasso's Les Femmes d'Alger (Version O), 179.4 million in 2015, as the highest price for modern art at auction (TheValue). Two more Klimt landscapes from the same Leonard A. Lauder collection made 86 million and 70.8 million that evening.

A year later the mood had not broken. On 22 October 2026 Monet's Iris sold for 50 million euros, about 56 million dollars, at Sotheby's Paris, against an estimate of 22 to 30 million euros, the highest price ever paid for an artwork in France without adjusting for inflation (The Art Newspaper).

The size of the market in 2025

The Art Basel and UBS Global Art Market Report 2026 puts global sales at 59.6 billion dollars in 2025, up 4% from 57.5 billion in 2024. Public auctions rose 9% to 20.7 billion, dealers 2% to 34.8 billion, private sales through auction houses fell 5% to just under 4.2 billion. At the top, sales of works above 10 million dollars grew 30%, and the value of fine art lots sold above 1 million rose 21% (Art Basel).

So the expensive end led the recovery. That matters for the names in this guide, because almost all their important works sell in that bracket.

Records against recent results

A record tells you what one buyer paid for one exceptional work on one night. The recent results tell you more about what an ordinary good example is worth today.

Depth: how many works come up and how many sell

Depth is the number that decides how easily you can sell. HENI, which tracks auction results, counts about 2,100 Warhol lots offered in the two years to October 2026, 76% sold, for 391.4 million dollars. Richter: about 1,300 lots, 68% sold, 245 million. Basquiat: about 170 lots in the two years to May 2026, only 57% sold, for 299.7 million (HENI, artist profiles consulted 28 October 2026).

Read those three together. Warhol has a market at every level, from prints at a few thousand dollars to paintings at eight and nine figures, so there is almost always a buyer somewhere. Basquiat has a thin market made of expensive paintings; when four in ten lots fail to sell, the seller of a major work may wait a season or accept a lower price. Klimt is the extreme case, with only a handful of major paintings in private hands.

Repeat sales add a warning. Warhol's Double Elvis and Sixteen Jackies made less in 2026 than at their previous sales in 2018 and 2023. The top end pays for the exceptional works and is less generous with the rest.

What drives prices at the top

Period first. A Picasso of 1932, a Basquiat of 1982, a Warhol of the early 1960s, a Monet of the water lily series: the market pays a large premium for the years that made the artist's name. Then provenance and freshness, meaning a work that has not been on the market for decades. Then size and subject. A famous single-owner collection, like Lauder's in 2025, adds its own premium. And guarantees: many evening sale lots are sold with a third party guarantee arranged before the auction, so the price is partly fixed in advance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most expensive Modern artwork ever sold at auction?

Klimt's Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer, 236.4 million dollars at Sotheby's New York on 18 November 2025, ahead of Picasso's Les Femmes d'Alger (Version O) at 179.4 million in 2015.

What is a sell-through rate?

The share of lots offered at auction that actually sold. A low rate means sellers' expectations are above what buyers will pay, and works that fail to sell can weigh on the artist's prices for a while.

Is a higher record a sign the artist is a safer investment?

No. A record says what one work fetched. Number of lots, sell-through rate and recent repeat sales say more about how a typical work behaves.
